Program led By Incarerated People Helps End Gang Violence

Gang life was all they knew. It landed them in prison. Now, they want to set others free from self-destruction.

Ready for Change is an Oklahoma prison program, founded and led by prisoners. It teaches leadership. Healthy masculinity. Anger management. Spiritual healing. And leaving gangs behind.

Darris Wallace, aka “Slap”, is a recent graduate of the program. 15 years ago he made headlines in Tulsa for a gang-related crime. This year he made headlines for a meeting with Tulsa Mayor Monroe Nichols just weeks after leaving Dick Connor Correctional Facility.

Recording an interview with Darris “Slap” Wallace at Bluehouse Media in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Saturday, June 20, 2026.

Now, Slap speaks to the same schools he used to attend, teaching kids at-risk of joining gangs. Kids who listen to him because they know he understands.

What can programs like this teach us about community, redemption, and the root causes of crime? And does it hold the key to solving community violence?

I’m grateful to be trusted by these men to capture their stories. This short documentary project is currently in the pre-production phase. To help make it a reality, visit InDepthDocs.com to learn more.
