My dad was 3 when the massacre occurred. His sister was 9. She remembered. My grandfather’s employee was taken to a pen at the fairgrounds. Grandfather vouched for him to get him released. I didn’t grow up in Tulsa but family lore kept the facts alive. When visiting my grandparents, I was driven by the ravaged Greenwood and taught the history. My grandparents had been in this country only 12 years. Grandmother said it was like a pogrom that killed her family. We don’t forget.
